Methodology

What Close Index is

Close Index tracks publicly announced closings of European VC, growth and PE buy-out funds. It is an independent project by Kai Marek, based on public sources.

Included funds

European venture capital (VC), growth and private equity (PE) funds with a first or final closing announced since 1 January 2025. VC coverage includes funds from €10m, growth funds form a separate group, and PE covers buy-out funds only, with no minimum size. VC funds that also invest at the growth stage remain under VC. Venture debt, studios and evergreen funds are excluded.

Secondaries funds are not included. Funds with Europe in their mandate are included, including global funds.

Status definitions

Fund status definitions
StatusMeaning
TargetThe fundraising goal the manager has announced. It is shown only when no raised amount has been reported.
Pre-CloseFundraising is under way and investors have committed capital, but no closing has been announced yet.
First closeThe fund has held its first closing and can start investing. More capital may still follow.
CommittedThe capital investors have committed so far, as publicly reported before a final close.
ClosedA closing was announced without saying whether it was a first or a final close.
Final closeFundraising has ended. The amount is the fund's final size.

One row per fund

If a fund has several capital events, the row shows the latest or highest reported amount. If a final close exists, only the final close is shown.

Headline figures

Totals and medians cover every fund with a reported amount; funds with only a target are not counted. A reported size does not tell you how much capital is left to invest.

Sources and verification

Every entry is based on at least one public source: a press release from the manager or an investor, a regulatory filing, or reporting by an established trade publication. Size, status and close date change only when a public source confirms them, so corrections without a source link are not applied.

Older entries with status Launched, Pre-Close or First close and a last event older than six months are re-checked against a public source.

Currencies

The fund database has no currency field. The currency a fund was raised in is read from the announced size text, such as "USD 120m" or "£120m". Sizes, totals and medians are shown in euros as recorded in the source data. When a size was converted, the originally announced figure appears as "As reported", and funds raised in another currency show a currency line in their details. Close Index does not apply its own exchange rates on the page.

Updates

New announcements are added as they are reviewed; changes normally appear within ten minutes.

Known limitations

Coverage is not guaranteed complete, and public announcements can omit details. A closing does not confirm that a manager is investing now or open to a particular opportunity. Check current information with the manager before relying on it. Close Index does not provide investment advice.

Amounts are as reported by managers or investors. First closes can be revised later.
